The number one competitive eater in the world according to Major League Eating, Joey Chestnut, will compete in the World Pancake Eating Championship on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Merchants Square on Duke of Gloucester Street in Williamsburg. The event carries a $5,000 prize purse, presented by the Williamsburg Hotel & Motel Association, with first place receiving $2,500. Last year’s competition was won by Geoff Esper, who consumed 35 pancakes in 10 minutes.

Competitive eating has developed into a structured sport over several decades, with measurable career earnings and a ranked hierarchy of competitors. An engineer by trade, Chestnut once estimated his annual earnings a $500,000 through a combination of competition winnings, sponsorships, and speaking engagements costing between $10,000 to $20,000 per event. Establishing himself as the best competitive eater with an estimated $4 million net worth did not come easy. Chestnut holds 55 world records across 55 separate food disciplines, and secured his latest Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, NY earlier this year, though he wasn’t able to match his own best of 76 hot dogs and buns consumed in 10 minutes, though he still took home a $10,000 prize for the victory.

Three-Day Williamsburg Pancake Festival:

Friday: All-you-can-eat dinner at the Virginia Ballroom with live music and competitive eater meet-and-greets

Saturday: Williamsburg Farmers Market (8 a.m. to 12 p.m.), vendor activities, Sausage Sprint dog race, breakfast games, and the World Pancake Eating Championship (12:30 p.m.). Pancakes are supplied by Traditions at the Williamsburg Lodge and Colonial Williamsburg Resorts.

Sunday: “Pancakes Around Town” with participating restaurants offering special entertainment

Chestnut isn’t the only top competitive eater coming to Williamsburg, which touts itself as the pancake capital of the world. Eight of the 10 eaters scheduled to appear are ranked in the top 50 by Major League Eating, the sports premier governing body.
