Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools presented a textbook selection and adoption proposal at a work session, recommending new instructional materials in mathematics and career and technical education for the coming school year. The proposal addresses two content areas: CTE AP Business and Personal Finance, which includes supplemental materials from College Board, and mathematics covering Pre-Algebra 6, 7, 8, and Algebra I, with current math textbooks identified as outdated and misaligned with 2023 standards. Following a structured review and community feedback process, a final recommendation will be brought to the board for a vote at a regular meeting.
Courtney Mompoint, Ed.S., Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction, presented the proposal to board members, framing the effort around a key priority of the division’s Elevate to 28 strategic plan, which calls for high-quality instructional materials to support aligned, rigorous instruction and meaningful student engagement. Mompoint noted that the Virginia Department of Education requires local school boards to adopt high-quality instructional materials aligned with standards of learning, and that the mathematics adoption would complete the division’s HQIM mandate for core materials in that content area. The presentation outlined the full work plan, including the selection process, review committee structure, evaluation criteria, and estimated costs for both subject areas.
Both content areas follow the same project timeline running from September through December 2026, with the selection and adoption work distributed across the first half of the school year. The timeline is structured to allow sufficient time for staff, families, and community members to review materials and provide feedback, while also ensuring the work is completed in accordance with Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools’ spending timelines. Estimated costs outlined in the proposal are $15,000 for CTE, funded through CCR Funds, and $475,000 for mathematics.
