Williamsburg is collecting sharply more in meals and lodging taxes this fiscal year than last, but the picture changes once the higher tax rates are factored into the analysis. According to a financial presentation to City Council on Oct. 8 by the City’s Chief Financial Officer, Barbara Dameron, lodging tax collections are up 36.4% from last year, to more than $1.1 million, and meals tax collections are up 31.7%, to about $2.2 million. Those totals include new tax rates of 7% on lodging and 6.5% on meals. But when adjusted for the higher rates, lodging collections are down 2.6% so far this fiscal year, though meals collections are up 1.3%.
