The Williamsburg Independent podcast is taking a closer look at a housing story out of York County that offers a ground-level view of how federal dollars can make a real difference in a historic community.
In this episode, editor George Arbogust walks through Virginia’s Department of Housing and Community Development’s recent compliance review of York County’s Carys Chapel Road housing rehabilitation project, which found the county managed the effort in full compliance with federal and state regulations.
The numbers behind the project tell a compelling story. Over the course of the grant, the county improved living conditions for 27 low-income residents across 15 households, rehabilitating more than a dozen homes, fully rebuilding one, and clearing a vacant structure that had fallen into disrepair. All of that for about $1.54 million in combined federal and local funding.
But beyond the figures, this is a story about a historic corridor where families have owned their homes for generations, and about a county that showed up for them.
