WJCC explores AI tools for school bus routing

Artificial intelligence could help the district cut costs and improve transportation reliability for students

Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools is exploring whether AI-powered routing tools could improve efficiency across its student transportation system. James City County recently issued a Request for Information asking vendors to share details about available platforms, with responses due June 5, 2026. The division serves roughly 11,600 students across 16 schools, with buses logging more than 12,000 miles each weekday. A comparable district in Colorado used similar technology to cut bus stops by 21 percent and reduce commute times by 10 percent. No purchase commitment has been made.

A Williamsburg Independent editor used AI tools to summarize reporting and narrate the post.
