Williamsburg Area Arts Commission Grant Deadline Approaching
Nonprofit arts and cultural organizations invited to apply by December for FY27 funding

The window to apply for a Williamsburg Area Arts Commission (WAAC) arts grant for Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27) will close at the beginning of December. Until then, nonprofits across the Historic Triangle can apply for arts-related projects and events funding. WAAC operates as a joint initiative of the City of Williamsburg and James City County, with additional funding provided by the Virginia Commission for the Arts.
“The arts in our community take many forms—art exhibitions, dance concerts, theatre productions, symphonies—and they all contribute to the cultural vibrancy that makes Williamsburg such a special place. With support from the Williamsburg Area Arts Commission, these opportunities are widely available to residents and the many tourists who visit each year,” wrote Thomas Phelps, WAAC Chair, in a recent statement posted online. “
Each year, the organization reviews applications from local nonprofit arts groups and recommends funding levels for inclusion in the local governments’ annual arts budgets. Once the grants are approved by the Williamsburg City Council and James City County Board of Supervisors, award notifications will be issued in June next year for FY27 (July 1, 2026 - June 30, 2027).
The total FY26 grant budget was $159,000, supported by equal contributions of $75,000 from the City and County, plus a $9,000 state challenge grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia. WAAC plans to return to pre-COVID guidelines and fund only specific projects, programs, or performances, but not general operating expenses.
Last year, WAAC awarded grants to over thirty organizations, including the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra, Muscarelle Museum of Art at the College of William and Mary, and Virginia Stage Company. Applicants must be nonprofit arts or cultural organizations with tax-exempt status and must submit a detailed project description with a budget, and a list of board members with contact information, among other information.
Grant recipients must use funds for their approved purposes and submit a year-end report by June 30 of the funded fiscal year. Organizations are also required to display the WAAC logo on all materials related to funded events and acknowledge Commission support at live performances or public programs.
