Residential exterior changes and commercial signs kept Williamsburg's Architectural Review Board busy in 2025
The city's ARB heard 145 architectural and 34 sign cases last year
The Williamsburg Architectural Review Board serves as the city’s primary body for evaluating proposed physical modifications within the Architectural Preservation and Corridor Protection Districts. Through its review of applications for new construction, exterior alterations, and signage, the board works to ensure that changes to both residential and commercial properties remain consistent with the area’s established character and standards.
The city recently released a summary of the board’s activities and decisions in calendar year 2025. Last year, the board held 21 meetings and collectively processed 179 applications. Of those, 145 were requests for architectural review. The majority were approved outright, with 100 receiving full approval and 15 approved with conditions. Beyond those decisions, 21 applications underwent conceptual review, while 5 were denied, 6 were withdrawn, and 1 remains pending.
In addition to architectural matters, the board also handled 34 separate sign review requests totaling 59 different signs during the year. Of those applications, 32 sign requests were approved, while 1 was denied and 1 remained pending resolution.
