NEWS: Updates for Yorktown Freight Shed Proposed
Yorktown Design Committee will consider upgrades to resolve HVAC issues, enhance security, and preserve Yorktown waterfront views

York County is requesting approval from the Historic Yorktown Design Committee to replace all exterior doors at the Freight Shed located at 331 Water Street. The proposed update is intended to address ongoing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) issues, improve security, and resolve difficulties with sourcing replacement parts for the aging doors.
The project includes the replacement of four door sets—one facing Water Street and three facing the York River—with new glass doors framed in black enamel. These new doors would allow for remote locking and would resemble the existing doors at York Hall, a nearby public building. The replacement is being pursued in part because the current doors are no longer manufactured and have become increasingly difficult to maintain.
Located in the heart of Riverwalk Landing, the Freight Shed is one of Yorktown’s most iconic waterfront venues. Originally built in 1935 by the National Park Service after a tropical storm destroyed much of the shoreline, the building served as a terminal for Baltimore steamships until 1952. It was later remodeled and repurposed as a post office, reflecting Yorktown’s evolving role as both a transportation hub and a community center.
Extensively renovated in 2005 as part of the Riverwalk Landing redevelopment, the current Freight Shed offers approximately 1,950 square feet of event space and features a large brick plaza overlooking the York River. Over the years, it has hosted a wide variety of events—from weddings and family reunions to corporate meetings, lectures, and concerts. More info about booking the venue can be found on the County’s website.
Although the Freight Shed is located in the Yorktown Historic District, it is classified as a non-contributing structure due to its relocation and renovation. Still, the proposed changes must adhere to the district’s design guidelines, which prioritize preserving the visual integrity of the waterfront and protecting views to and from the York River.
According to staff comments included in the application, the new doors will maintain the existing glass design, thereby preserving scenic sightlines for pedestrians and maintaining compatibility with surrounding buildings. The doors will also meet architectural standards in terms of material, proportion, and appearance.
Planning staff have recommended approval of the application, stating that the design is consistent with Yorktown’s guidelines and contributes to the unified character of the village. The Historic Yorktown Design Committee is scheduled to review the proposal at its upcoming meeting on July 16.
